Atlantis, Utopia and Ulvedrømmer
“Ulvedrømmer (Wolf Dreams) is a result of surplus energy and a culmination of the work Marianne and I have done together over the years. It is a joyous meeting over our great admiration of the musical, of dance and song but with a serious undercurrent. The movements are created as loops with several layers of cello and in addition often a solo part in cello or voice. The core of the work is the song «Ulvene og reven» (The wolves and the fox) where the light optimism of musical theatre meets the nightmare.”
Atlantis, Utopia and Ulvedrømmer is a project where cellist Marianne Baudouin Lie plays works for solo cello and her own voice. These works explore speech and the singing voice as an extension of the instrument’s sound world and expression. The cello is the instrument that may be closest to the voice, and some works have been composed using this, but the fact that it is the cellist’s own voice used for coloring is unusual and creates an unexpected closeness in the expression.
